Our Approach

The ‘keys for learning’
We will provide you with a full explanation of all our 'keys for learning' in our easy-to-understand workshop. Listed below is a small sample of the strategies we use to teach skills and change behaviours.

  • Reinforcement – a consequence that follows a behaviour and increases the future frequency of that behaviour.
  • Errorless learning – providing hints or cues to help your child learn a new skill ensuring they always respond correctly.
  • Pairing - simultaneously presenting desireable items/activities with the teaching environment so that the therapist and teaching setting becomes enjoyable for your child.
  • Task analysis – breaking down complex skills into manageable chunks e.g. dressing.
  • Generalisation – demonstrating a skill in many contexts e.g. across different settings or with different people.

The teaching environment
These ‘keys' are used within Natural Environment Teaching (NET) and Intensive Teaching Trials (ITT). NET is not defined by the setting you are in, but what you are talking about. Within NET, all demands that are placed on your child are related to the item or activity that is valuable to them in that moment. In contrast, ITT is fast paced one-to-one teaching led by the therapist and the reinforcement can be unrelated to the learning activity. Your child's needs will determine how much time will be spent doing NET and ITT.
